Civic body begins intense tax drive
The cash strapped city corporation launched an intensive tax collection drive on Tuesday. Mayor Tony Chammany inaugurated the drive by collecting property tax from Kochouseph Chittilappilly, noted industrialist, at his residence.
The civic body plans to garner Rs20 crore from the special drive which ends on September 30. “During the first five months of this fiscal, the corporation could collect Rs12 crore as tax revenue. And the special drive is expected to generate Rs20 crore by September 30. With this, the total revenue collection during the first half of the financial year will be Rs32 crore”, said a top functionary at the revenue department.
However, tax collection from March to August has been less when compared to the corresponding period last fiscal. Last year, the civic body could collect bonus tax due to clearing of arrears.
As part of the drive, special counters will be opened in all 74 divisions for tax collection which will work without holidays. “A circular has been issued asking the revenue department employees to work every day without taking off on holidays. They can take compensatory off the next month” added the official.
