Corp. to call tender: Rs 5 crore for city cleaning works
The city corporation has allocated Rs 5 crore for pre-monsoon cleaning works in the city and has completed tender process for these works.
While replying to the debate during council meeting, Mayor Tony Chammany said that cleaning works would be carried out before the month end.
Several opposition councillors alleged that the civic body had failed to take steps to initiate cleaning drains and canals in the city. “The city will be flooded if desilting and removal of weeds are not carried out before the monsoon,” said N.A. Shafeek, opposition councillor.
Replying to the debate, the Mayor said that though the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd has taken over the cleaning of the Perandoor canal, works would be carried out under the supervision of the civic body.
The Kerala State Inland Navigation Corporation will carry out cleaning works for KMRL. “A meeting of stakeholders will be convened on April 14 in which a monitoring committee will be constituted to supervise cleaning works,” Chammany said.
The council has also decided to visit the Mysore City Corporation to assess the functioning of the innovative solid waste management plant set up there. “Some local bodies in the state have already plans to use the Mysore model technology for waste treatment. If this proves good, the technology will be used in Brahmapuram,” informed the Mayor.
