This is court, not Assembly, PC George told

UDF chief whip P.C. George, known for his acerbic tongue and Poonjar slang, was reminded by the Kerala high court on Monday, “this is court, not Assembly”, when he held forth against a vicar.

George had moved the court raising serious allegations against the vicar of St Joseph Church at Koovappally.

And he came in person, before the court, to strongly argue the case, which was essentially against the shifting of the office of the sub-registrar office from Erumeli to Koovappalli.
The Poonjar MLA had filed an impleading petition on an appeal of the

vicar against a single bench order which had asked the state to take appropriate decision in the matter. The single judge had refused to issue a direction to shift the office from Erumely to Koovappalli.

According to George, the entire episode of shifting the registrar was a plot hatched by the vicar “with a view to disrupting the communal harmony” in the area. There was no need to shift the office to a place eight km away, he argued. During the forceful arguments, the court reminded George that he was standing before the court, and not in theassembly.

A division bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice Babu Mathew P. Joseph orally observed: “Now PC is before us against a vicar. But when election comes he will try to please the Church.” And this filled the court room with laughter.

According to George, Koovappally St Joseph’s Church Vicar Anotny Nirappel was behind the Nirappel communal riot which happened decades back. But the vicar’s counsel countered that by saying the church had given five cents of land for constructing the office.

The court asked the government pleader to submit the state’s stand, and posted the case for hearing after vacation.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
