CUSAT advises caution
The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) Syndicate which met on Saturday asked the varsity registrar to proceed with caution and meet all legal formalities in the case of Dr B. Madhusoodana Kurup before terminating him from the service of Cusat.
The rethinking on the part of the Syndicate has come in the wake of the quashing by the Kerala High Court of the suspension of former registrar Dr N. Chandramohan Kumar by the Syndicate for facilitating the relieving of Dr Kurup from CUSAT.
The direction was given by the Syndicate on Satur-day before the Registrar Dr A. Ramachandran fina-lised the minutes of the last Syndicate meeting.
The Syndicate asked him to serve a legal notice to Dr Kurup who is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Ke-rala University of Fish-eries and Ocean Studies on deputation from CUSAT.
There were reported to be differences between Syndicate members over giving Dr Kurup a chance to give his version.
One Syndicate member said that since Dr Kurup has returned Rs 30 lakhs to CUSAT coffers, he was admitting to his wrongdoing and hence there was no need to hear him, sources said.
The financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 1.26 crore indulged in by Dr Kurup were detected by the vigilance wing of the state finance department.
The Syndicate directed the Registrar to inform the Governor H.R. Bharadwaj, who is the chancellor of both the varsities, about the developments and conform to all other legal formalities so that the measure stood legal scrutiny in courts.
The Syndicate also resolved to meet the shortcomings at the Cochin Univertiy College of Engineering at Kuttanad, which were pointed out by the AICTE inspection team recently.
