Degree must for motor vehicle inspectors soon
After shortening the posting period of motor vehicles department officials, the government now plans to bring in more changes in the department, including raising the basic qualification for MV inspectors.
Till now the minimum qualification for the post was a diploma in automobile engineering/mechanical engineering.
But the new generation vehicles are highly sophisticated and are subject to technological innovations very frequently.
The job demands candidates who are updated on techno advancements.
“Now the government plans to raise the qualification for motor vehicle inspectors from diploma to that of degree.
Minister Aryadan Mohammed has discussed the change with top officials and the necessary amendment will be brought soon,” a top MVD official said.
The inspectors’ job includes examining vehicles for damage and malfunction, testing vehicle components for wear, damage, or improper adjustment, using mechanical or electrical devices, preparing reports on each vehicle for follow-up action by the owner or the police, among others.
Already about 30 to 40 per cent of personnel in the post have an engineering degree and the measure will not affecting the existing staff.
“The government has already implemented the measure in the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation where the qualification of depot engineer (similar to the MVI post) is BTech”, the official said.
