District caught in headless Kerala
The Ernakulam district is literally headless at the moment as top bureaucrats including the district collector and the mayor are on leave while the post of district medical officer lies vacant following the retirement of the incumbent, R.Sudhakaran.
This, at a crucial time, when the district is grappling with monsoon-related diseases. Adding to the woes are the back-to-back incidents of gas cylinder blasts.
Even the Additional District Magistrate’s post has been vacant for some time now and the new officer B.Ramachandran took over only a few days ago.
Collector Sheikh Pareeth is busy as his daughter’s marriage is on July 1. And mayor Tony Chammany, along with his family, has flown to Dubai straight from Russia, where a Kochi corporation delegation had gone to explore the possibilities of technological collaboration, cultural exchange and business partnerships.
Though other members of the corporation team are back, the mayor will be in Kochi only after two days.
“Both the collector and the ADM K.N.Rajeev had applied for leave as their children were getting married. Initially, the government had refused to sanction leave to the two top bureaucrats simultaneously, but then the reason was quite valid.
“Hence, B. Ramachandran was deputed from Thrissur corporation to Kochi at short notice”, a collectorate official said.
Similarly, the district medical officer’s post had not been filled after Sudhakaran’s retired on May 31.
“The authorities are yet to make an announcement in this regard. Currently, the charge has been given to additional DMO Dr Hazeena Muhammad”, a health official said.
