Empty homes to burglars’ delight

With many city dwellers leaving for their ancestral houme and other destinations to celebrate Onam holidays in the next two days, several houses in the city would be vacant for almost 10 days.

The police has stepped up vigil and patrolling in the city and is cautioning residents to double-check locks and shut all windows before leaving the house. They have also been asked to alert neighbours staying back.

Police has asked residents to inform nearest police station before they leave for vacation. The direction is also in the wake of rising number of burglary cases targeted at houses of vacationers.

“The burglars get to know that the family is on a vacation when he/she sees piled-up newspapers in the sit-out.

People should make sure they ask the newspaper boys to stop distributing the dailies if they are on vacation,” says T. Gopa-lakrishna Pillai, the deputy commissioner of police.

The police has also decided to intensify night patrolling in the city. “We have set up night patrolling to control any sort of burglary.

If the families inform us that they are on vacation, it would be easy for us to identify the house and keep a strict vigil over it. They can do this with the nearest police station” said Gopalakrishna Pillai.
