Ernakulam tops in setting up bio-toilets
The Ernakulam district tops the list when it comes to setting up of electronic toilets, the technological answer to public sanitation, closely followed by the state capital.
This is thanks to a host of initiatives like the suchi@school led by MP, P. Rajeev and the Rotary Club-funded project to set up 1000 toilets in areas like Vypeen, Chellanam and Munambum.
A total of 105 e-toilets have been set up across 37 government and aided schools in the district as part of the Sustainable Comprehensive Hygiene Initiative programme that is nearing completion, Rajeev said.
Over one crore rupees has been spent from his Local Area Development fund for the project, which is aimed at ensuring clean campuses in schools. “Kerala has earned the elite distinction of setting up the maximum number of e-toilets for public use across the country and currently Ernakulam leads in its implementation.”
So said Dr Siddeek Ahmed, Chairman & Managing Director of the Eram Group, which is responsible for setting up the e-toilets across the state.
The Rotary Club of Cochin will finance the installation of 110 toilets in the next six months. It is part of a bigger project to give 1000 toilets to areas of Vypeen, Chellanam and Munambam.
