Ex-VC lands varsity in soup over illegal construction
The former vice-chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Mr K.S. Radhakrishnan, who is also the current chairman of the Kerala Public Service Commission, has landed the varsity in a soup by constructing building worth nearly Rs 2 crore for its Tirur centre at the property belonging to an aided school in Tirunavaya during his tenure as VC.
Mr Radhakrishnan had given the impression to the then Syndicate of the varsity in 2005 that the manager of the school had ‘donated’ the three acre land to the university to build its centre.
While the Syndicate minutes stood testimony to this fact, the agreement between the registrar of the university and the manager of the Navamukunda Higher Secondary School, which has been accessed by DC, revealed that it was only a ‘licence’ given by the school management to set up the centre.
The issue suddenly surfaced this year with the school management constructing a wall on the
compound and the director of the centre writing to the headmaster asking him not to do it.
The school manager then wrote to the director pointing out that it had every right to do construction as per the agreement.
Having spent Rs 2 crore for setting up the infrastructure for the centre and currently running UG and PG courses, the university is now at a loss on how to untie the knot created by the former VC.
Incumbent Vice-Chancellor Dr J Prasad has written to the current syndicate to take appropriate action to salvage the situation.
