Ezhuthachan award for Attoor

Noted poet Attoor Ravi Varma has been selected for the highest literary prize instituted by the Kerala government, the Ezhuthachan Award, for his contributions to Malayalam literature.

The award was announced by rural development and cultural affairs minister K.C. Joseph at Ramanilayam here on Thursday.

Later, Joseph visited the writer at his home at Ponkunnam, near here, to inform him about the award.
“I am surprised, unexpectedly” commented Attoor in his usual poetic style. The bard is on a mission to translate Tamil epic Kamba Ramayanam into Malayalam.

In a literary career spanning five decades, many accolades have come Attoor’s way. e won the Kerala and Kendra Sahitya Akademi awards, and the Aasan Prize in 1997.

The jury was chaired by Perumbadavam Sreedharan, president of the Kerala Sahithya Akademi. Ezhuthachan Award carries a cash of Rs 1.5 lakh, a citation and memento. The award was instituted in 1993 in memory of Thunchathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, regarded as the father of Malayalam
language.

The date for the award ceremony is yet to be decided.
