GCDA-CSL pact for new road to Thevara
Ending a 30-year stand-off between the Greater Cochin Development Au-thority (GCDA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited, both parties agreed on Wednes-day to pave the way for an unbridled passage from Panampalli Nagar to The-vara, through a 13-acre plot that belongs to the latter.
The shipyard will now hand over 35 cents of land to lay a 10-metre road from the blunt southern end of the current Panampalli Nagar road to Mattummal junction at Thevara, so that vehicles from the northern parts of the city can go to Thevara and the southern stretch of MG Road, without having to go through the heart of the city.
An agreement to this effect was reached between GCDA chairman N. Venugopal, secretary George Vallakkali and CSL estate manager George Varghese, General Manager Vinaya Kumar and finance officer Babu, in the presence of the local self-government secretary in Thiruvananthapuram, on Wednesday. The talks between the two sides were initiated last week.
As of now, there is a railway cross at Atlantis for entry to MG Road and it takes a long run through K.P. Vallon road to reach Thevara.
The current Panampalli Nagar road has a width of 30 metres and with the laying of the new 10 metre extension, vehicles proceeding from there will get a straight and hassle-free passage to MG Road and Thevara.
“Apart from giving the land for free as a goodwill gesture, the Cochin Shipyard has agreed to pay `1 crore in a one-time settlement of outstanding dues to the GCDA,” said GCDA chairman N. Venugopal. He said the amount was due to it after having sold 13 acres of GCDA land to the shipyard, way back in 1972.
