Goodbye bumpy rides

Four roads in the city will soon get a facelift as the city corporation has decided to rebuild them using bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete (BMBC), which will increase their longevity.

Roads from Edappally, Palluruthy, Vyttila and Fort Kochi zones will be developed using Plan funds.

The roads that will be rebuilt are Subhashchandra Bose road in the Vyttila zone, Santogopalan road in the Fort Kochi zone Desabhimani road in the Edappally zone and MLA road in the Palluruthy zone.

Soumini Jain, chairperson of the works committee told Deccan Chronicle that there was a general demand from people in the ward committee meetings to relay these roads. Ward committee meetings had been convened to discuss the formulation of plans under the 12th Five Year Plan.

“As most roads in the central zone have already been rebuilt to BMBC specifications by the
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Public Works Department, we need to focus on developing roads in other areas,” she said.

Fund allocation for the project will be finalised once state government approves the estimate and schedule of the Plan fund utilisation.

Apart from the Plan fund road development projects, the civic body has plans to take up relaying of other roads within the city, using the BMBC.

“Those roads with heavy traffic will be resurfaced using the corporation’s own fund. A final decision on the number of roads to be repaired will be taken after discussing with various stakeholders,” added Soumini Jain.

Meanwhile, with scanty monsoon rains, most roads in the city are still in a good condition.
“This monsoon, the roads have not developed potholes as there was not much flooding. So, most of the recently re-laid roads are intact,” added Soumini Jain.
