Goondas can now be detained for one year
The period of preventive detention is to be extended from six months to one year, as per a state government decision.
This is with a view to giving more teeth to the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, and as desired by the police department.
An amendment to the act to this effect would be moved during the next session of the assembly.
As part of the drive against illegal sand mining, the government deci-ded to book those invol-ved in sand smuggling cases under the Goonda Act. It is also decided that those involved in anti-social activities would be classified into two, depending on the gravity of the crime.
Those who are involved in serious crimes like murder would be brought under the category of goonda, while those in-volved in less serious anti-social activities would fall in the category rowdy.
