HC: Try pvt firms to manage waste

The High Court has asked the State Government to consider engaging private agencies in solid waste management.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A.M. Shaffique made the observation on Wednesday while considering the Vilappil waste treatment plant case.

In other States, including Karnataka, the Government engaged private agencies to treat solid waste and Kerala could study this model, the bench said.

The court said the Government should allot land to agencies and they could use the solid waste for biogas generation and other purposes.

The Corporation officials should devote more time to administer than manage waste, the court said, while criticizing the Government for not implementing any of the project proposals connected with waste management in the state.

The bench posted the case for further hearing and asked the Corporation to file a statement on steps taken towards the establishment of such machinery.

The court had appointed a mediation committee to resolve issues between the Vilappil panchayat and Janakeeya Samiti, which opposes the apex court order to reopen the garbage plant. Close to five rounds of mediation talks have been held, though in vain.
