Heavy rains delay road repair works
The civic authorities, public works department (PWD) and National Highway Authority are racing against a deadline to complete repairing of city roads and beautification of national highway 47 from Angamaly to Maradu, ahead of the Emerging Kerala meet beginning shortly.
The repair and beautification work has been hit by monsoon rains that have picked up during the last few days.
Though the corporation’s works committee chairperson, Soumini Jain, had said earlier that the work would be completed by Sunday evening, some city roads still have deep potholes.
“Repairing of city roads and beautification is nearing completion. Tar-ring could not be completed due to heavy rains. However, we will be able to finish the preparatory works by Tuesday,” Ms Jain said.
All major roads that will see VIP movement, such as Park Avenue, Fore Shore Road, MG Road and Banerjee Road are being cleaned and beautified.
Patch work, cleaning and beautification of SA Road, Chittoor Road, Edappally-High Court Road and Kundannoor-Thevara are being carried out jointly by the corporation and PWD.
Reflectors have been fixed on the medians and barricades will be erected along roads where more crowds are expected.
“The civic body will ensure that the main routes and alternative routes from the airport to the city are in good condition so that the delegates and VIPs have a smooth ride,” Ms Jain said.
