IOC withdraws 2,500 LPG cylinders from market

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) which manages the Indane gas agency, withdrew nearly 2,500 LPG cylinders which were found to be defective or had crossed the expiry date, from the markets in Ernakulam region.

The action was initiated following a drive launched by IOC in the five districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Thrissur, in the wake of cylinder blasts in different parts of Ernakulam recently.

A senior official said that these cylinders would be brought back into the market after repairs shortly before Onam and the IOC is currently confident that the cylinders in the market are 99 per cent ‘pucca’.

“We are reporting one or two expiry/defect cases and are withdrawing them as and when noticed,” he said.

He said that the cylinders would be subjected to statutory checks like internal and external cleaning and pneumatic and hydrostatic tests on completion of the first 10 years.

“If any defects are found, then they will be corrected and only then will the cylinders be put into the market,” the official said.
