Japanese techies celebrate Onam

Yoshie, Momoko, Risa, Daichi and Yusuke, five youngsters from Kuma-moto in Japan, never thought they would fall in love with Kerala’s traditions when they came to ‘God’s own country’, a few months ago.

But Kerala and its culture have now become close to their hearts with the five techies celebrating Onam with the students of Sacred Heart College in Thevara on Thursday.

Software developers at Indocosmo in Kadavant-hara, Yoshie and pals have been studying English at Sacred Heart College.

So when their Malayali friends told them about the Onam celebrations in college, they took it as a challenge and came dressed in the traditional sari and mundu.

Principal Prasant Palakkappillil also made it a point to bring in the Japanese students for Onam celebrations.

“This is the first time I’m wearing a sari. Though it’s a bit tough to handle this never ending piece of cloth, I love it. It’s really difficult to wear and handle saris.

But I must say girls look so cute in it”, says Yoshie. “We do not have celebrations like this back home. Onam is a very good festival. I’m so impressed with the floral carpet. It’s really awesome”, she adds.

The Japanese gang also took part in the grand feast in the college.
