KCBC calls for a booze-free Onam
The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) called on Tuesday for celebrating Onam in a simple way without liquor.
In a statement wishing a happy and peaceful Onam to all Malayalis, the KCBC said that we should keep in mind, the thousands of poor among us when we spend money on consumer goods, textiles and lavish food.
“Onam should be an occasion to share what we have with the less fortunate among us,” said KCBC.
The Bishops Council also called for an Onam without liquor.
“We should make an attempt this Onam to keep off liquor, which has of late, become an inevitable part of all celebrations. It is time we understood this social evil and learnt to celebrate festivals without liquor,” said the council.
“Onam is also an occasion to spread the message of love and harmony in society,” KCBC president Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, vice-president Archbishop Francis Kallarackal and secretary general Archbishop Thomas Mar Kurilos said in a message.
