Kochi is safest in Kerala for women
According to the National Crimes Record Bureau Kochi has the highest number of crimes committed and number of cases registered in the country, but when it comes to crimes specifically targeting women, it is the safest city in the state, according to a recent report published by the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).
The report cites the number of crimes against women that were reported in Kerala between January and June 2012. Kochi registered 208 cases.
Kollam registered the highest number of crimes against women at 315, while the numbers were 249, 304 and 271 for Thiru-vananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode respectively.
The detailed break-up of crime against women in Kochi shows that there were 13 rapes, 58 molestation bids, four kidnappings and eight eve-teasing incidents.
The report also says no case of dowry death has been reported from the city, though 70 cases have been reported under the category ‘cruelty by husband or relatives’ and 55 under ‘other offences’.
The SCRB statistics show that in the past five years too Kochi has had the least number of registered cases of crimes against women.
They were 408, 327, 243, 241 and 277 in the years 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007. Number of similar cases registered in Thiruvanan-thapuram during the
same years was 532, 442, 399, 310 and 363.
