Kochi sanitised: Bio toilets opened

Finally city dwellers have got hygienic and properly maintained public toilet facilities.

Union minister professor K.V. Thomas has inaugurated the clean and eco-friendly bio toilets set up in different areas in the city.

In a function held on Friday, the union minister opened the bio toilet near Ernakulam Town Hall. While addressing the gathering, the minister said, “A commercial hub like Kochi, where thousands of passengers come every day, needs modern facilities like bio toilets. These will also help in improving sanitation in the city. Such projects will get great public support.”

The minister added that there should be a proper system to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the toilets.

The corporation should set up more bio toilets in different parts of the city, where land is available. It can avail of financial assistance from banks and other institutions for the project, the minister added.

Mayor Tony Chammany presided over the inaugural function. Deputy mayor B. Bhadra, works committee chairperson Soumini Jain, welfare committee chairperson Essy Joseph, education committee chairman R. Thyagarajan, tax appeal committee chairperson Ratnamma Raju, K.J. Jacob, opposition leader, councillor Sudha Dileep Kumar and project engineer Jolly Varghese were also present.

Three bio toilets were opened on Friday in areas near the Town Hall, Kachripady and Fort Kochi.
Four more toilets will be installed in a fortnight in Palarivattom, on the Ernakulam market canal road, Vyttila and Kaloor.

The toilets are being set up by the Forest Industries Travancore Ltd (FIT) using the corporation’s own fund.
