Kochi shines in run-up to Deepavali
Residents of Kochi, along with the north Indian communities, are gearing up for Diwali, the festival of lights.
The streets of Mattancherry, where Gujaratis and Maharashtrians comprise the majority of the population, are abuzz with festive preparations. Those from other parts of the city throng the sweet shops in the area, which are renowned for their authentic Gujarati sweets.
Some of these sweet shops, which are more than half a century old, do brisk business, especially in the festive season. Their dedicated customers flock to them from all over the city.
The shop owners employ additional cooks to meet the demand during Diwali days. The price of boxes containing assorted delicacies ranges from Rs. 150 to Rs. 400.
The big hotels, bakeries and sweet shops in other parts of the city are also offering a bouquet of Diwali delicacies for the occasion.
Star hotels like Taj Gateway are making available special Diwali hampers which include sweets, dry fruits, crackers and diyas. Though a little heavy on the pocket, the boxes of dry fruits are in great demand.
Every year, north Indians residing in and around Kochi celebrate Diwali with great enthusiasm and religious fervor. During the festival, homes are decorated, sweets are distributed and thousand of lamps are lit.
Decorations like door hangings, lanterns and other embellishments are easily available in local shops during the festival days. The residents also celebrate by lighting diyas, exchanging sweets and lighting crackers.
