Kochi weathers monsoon attack
Even though the monsoon has intensified over the last couple of days, the city didn’t witness heavy water-logging, thanks to the effective drain cleaning work and strict monitoring by the corporation.
Though the local body failed to complete the pre-monsoon cleaning work, it succeeded in effectively monitoring whatever work was completed.
“This time, from tendering onwards, we were able to monitor the work. More contractors participated in the new centralised tendering process which was very competitive and foolproof.
The contractors and workers ensured the effective cleaning, silt-removal and de-clogging of canals and drains,” said Soumini Jain, chairperson, works committee.
Earlier, the tendering process was conducted through the zonal offices and there was no a proper system of monitoring the efficiency of contractors.
Meanwhile, in an effort to check water-logging, the civic body has constituted special squads to monitor the situation in all 74 divisions. Every three divisions will have a squad which will function from 6 am to 8 pm.
“Unlike in previous years, the rain water is easily being drained and no major flooding has been reported.
Complaints from various divisions on drains getting clogged by plastic waste has been addressed immediately with proper follow-up action,” added Soumini Jain.
The de-silting of various small canals and interior drains is continuing simultaneously and according to Ms. Jain, the cleaning work can be completed within a week.
