Lakeshore cures rare cardiac disease

A six-year-old boy with “tachycardiomyopathy”, a life-threatening condition due to abnormally rapid heart beat, was cured at Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, Kochi. after performing an advanced 3D mapping based radiofrequency ablation procedure.

The boy, Akshay Manoj of Kaniyamparambil house, Thondankulangara in Alappuzha, can now live like any other normal child, said Dr. Ajit Thachil , Consultant Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the hospital, who performed the surgery.

Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure by which areas of the heart that give rise to abnormal heart rhythms are heated in a controlled manner.

The more complex among these heart rhythm abnormalities require a 3D mapping system which creates a real-time virtual image of the heart and its electrical conduction.

This treatment, which usually does not require anaesthesia, is performed through tiny tubes inserted into the blood vessels and usually entails a two day hospital stay.

Akshay had been suffering from this condition since the age of three. He was wrongly diagnosed as having a stomach ailment initially and was consequently forbidden several foods like fruits, chocolates etc. He lost 3.5 kg of weight in the few months prior to consultation at Lakeshore.
