Maintain streetlights: HC tells Corporation
The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the Kochi Corporation and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to ensure that streetlights in the city were in good working order.
Responding to a petition filed by M K Baby complaining about poor streetlighting on MG Road in Kochi, Justice S Siri Jagan said it was the corporation's duty to make sure the lights worked.
“There can be no two opinions on the duty of the Corporation in this regard. Even if it has outsourced the work to contractors, it is still its duty to see that they do the job given,” he observed.
A R Pravitha, counsel for the petitioner, told the court that it was important for MG road which had five banks and several ATM counters, to be properly illuminated at night to stop crime from proliferating in the area.
The Corporation argued that all streelights were in good order in the city as their maintenance had been outsourced to the chief engineer, electrical major section and a private agency, S&S enterprises.
