March for water turns violent

The residents of Cheranalloor took out a protest march to the Kerala water authority (KWA) office on Friday demanding adequ-ate water supply to the area.
The march turned violent and protestors broke the windows of the office and destroyed office files and the telephone. Later, protestors ended the agitation on the assurance given by KWA officials that steps would be taken to resolve the issue that very same day.
Earlier, more than 200 protestors led by panchayat president and members organised a sit-in protest on a hospital road blocking the traffic. Police officials had a tough time controlling the protestors that included women and children.
Later, MLAs Hibi Eden and Ludie Louis held negotiations with the officials and the agitators. Officials assured the protestors that repair works of the pipe-lines would be completed within two days.
They also asked for police protection for KWA employees working in Cheranalloor. City police assistant commissioner Sunil Jacob also participated in the discussion.
Talking to newsmen Hibi Eden said that government was considering a special drinking water project for Cheranalloor panchayat.
Residents of the area have been reeling under acute water scarcity for more than three months. For the last one week, they have been protesting against the apathy of KWA officials in resolving the water shortage.
