MEMU service starting today
The much-awaited Main-line Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train, on the Ernakulam-Kollam route will start its service on Sunday.
Thousands of short distance passengers in the Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kollam will benefit from the service.
Sources said the inaugural train will be flagged off at 11 am from Ernakulam junction station.
It will be two years since MEMU trains hit the tracks.
Two rakes have already been stationed at the Ernakulam junction station. The MEMU trains announced in the last two railway budgets, figure on the 2011 railway timetable along with their timings.
In this year’s budget a new MEMU service has been promised for the state on the Ernakulam-Thrissur sector.
President of All-Kerala Rail Users Association K.J. Paul Manvettam said that the commercial capital city of Kochi needed more MEMU services.
The train will have stops at all stations and the running time between Kollam-Ernakulam will be 4 hours and 20 minutes.
