New med colleges unlikely this year
The Medical Council of India is understood to have decided not to sanction any new medical college for Kerala this year.
According to MCI sources, the apex body on medical education will not grant sanction to Ruckmoni Memorial Chari-table Educational Health Trust, Ponnambi, Thiruva-nanthapuram, to start a medical college with 100 seats this year, at Vellarada.
The Ruckmoni Memorial Trust had submitted an application to set up a new medical college with 150 seats wherein the consent of affiliation from the health university was for 100 seats.
MCI asked the trust authorities to submit the deficient documents like bank guarantee/authorisation letter to pursue the case.
The trust tried hard to get the MCI consent for 150 seats and wrote a letter to it stating it had requested for affiliation from the health university for the year 2012-13.
“The university has taken our application for consideration and the consent of affiliation as per the prescribed format is expected within 10 days time,” the letter had said.
According to the minutes of the meeting of the MCI held on May 7 and 8, because of the non-submission of the revised consent of affiliation within the time frame provided, the board of governors directed MCI to conduct an assessment for only 100 seats.
However, top MCI sources said on Saturday that they were firm in their decision not to sanction any new medical college this year.
All the same, the MCI has sanctioned 100 additional seats this year in Kerala.
