NHAI to hike toll rates at Kumbalam
In what appears to be a major blow to people in central Kerala, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to raise toll rates at Kumbalam on the Aroor-Edappally stretch.
The rise in rates ranges from Rs 5 to Rs 10 on a daily basis and up to Rs 190 a month.
According to revised rates, private four-wheelers will have to pay Rs 450 for a monthly pass.
Though four-wheelers, including cars and vans, light commercial vehicles and mini buses, do not have to pay extra one way, two-way travellers will have to pay Rs 5 extra.
Monthly rates of light commercial vehicles and mini buses have been raised by Rs 60, as it goes up to Rs 790.
Meanwhile, buses and trucks will have to pay Rs 5 extra for both one-way and multiple journeys.
The rate for vehicles with multiple axles has been increased by Rs 5 for one side and Rs 10 for multiple journeys. With this, these vehicles will have to pay Rs 190 extra for monthly passes.
New rates will take effect on Sunday. People have already started voicing their protest against the toll rise.
The toll at Kumbalam plaza is collected by the Cochin Port Road Company.
