No more overcrowding
Overcrowding at the main entrance of the Ernakulam Junction railway station will be a thing of the past soon as the main concourse area is to be expanded.
“Overcrowding is a problem especially during peak hours so we are expanding the concourse area by relocating around six telephone booths which currently consumes good space. This we will do in one month by demolishing the wall of an adjacent abandoned room and shifting the booths to it,” Ernakulam area manager P. L. Ashok Kumar said.
The project is part of the first phase of the plan to give the station world-class facilities. Currently, during peak hours, the queue before the ticket counter extends towards the concourse. This, together with the crowd in front of the information counter that is located there, hinders the smooth flow of passengers proceeding to and from the platform.
The information centre is also to be expanded to fit in more personnel who can handle more queries.
A modern tourist facilitation centre with a hi-fi system is also being planned. “Talks are on with the officials of the tourism department. If finalised, the department will finance the work,” Mr Kumar said.
On the integrated security system under which CCTV cameras and luggage scanners are to be installed, the official said all the infrastructure is ready and the contractor has to set it up.
