Peeping man shoots woman
A 75-year-old man, alleged to be a peeping Tom, attempted to kill his neighbor, a woman, by firing a bullet at her face in broad daylight on a street in Kumbalangi, near Palluruthy in Kochi, on Friday.
The police arrested the shooter, Josephkutty Kocheril, alias American Achayan, from Kumbalangi when after he attempted to murder 45-year old Mercy in a bid to stop her from lodging “peeping Tom” complaints against him.
Mercy has been admitted to a private hospital here, while the doctors are trying to remove the bullet that got lodged in her cheek. Her condition is not critical, said the doctors. The police said the issue started early on Friday morning, when Achayan allegedly attempted to peep into Mercy’s house while he was out jogging on the road.
“When she saw someone peeping into her room, she screamed for help and ran out of the house. But, the accused apologised to her and left the scene saying he had come to her house quite accidentally,” S. Rajesh, sub inspector of Palluruthy police said.
But the trouble cropped up because Achayan has quite a reputation as a peeping Tom. Not too happy with a mere apology, Mercy, along with her husband Mathew, went to a panchayat member Tojy, who happens to be a close relative, to complain about the incident.
“But on their way back home, Achayan stopped them on Kareenthara road and abused them for complaining against him. He took an air pistol out of his pocket and shot at her face,” the SI added.
The accused was presented before the chief judicial magistrate on Friday afternoon and was remanded in custody.
