Police arrest drug kingpins
Two kingpins of the state's drug mafia, Somon of Palarivattom and Razzaq of Chailikyavattom, were arrested on Friday by the Kochi special branch police and the Palarivattom police.
The arrests were a culmination of months of investigation and led to the seizure of 112 amp-oules of lupigesic injections.
Possessing the ampoules is a serious crime that can lead to 10 years of imprisonment and im-position of a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the Novel Drug Delivery System Act 22B.
A lupigesic injection is used as a pain killer for those suffering from diseases like cancer. Ava-liable for Rs 10, the drug, which cannot be bought without a doctor’s prescription, is sold for between Rs 250 and Rs 500 by the drug dealers.
The duo have reportedly confessed to buying the ampoules from Sulthan Batheri in Wayanad and selling them in Kochi.
With the arrest of the two men, altogether sev-en drug dealers have been put behind bars in the city over the last one month, according to Tomy Sebastian, assistant commissioner of Kochi special branch.
The police has appealed to the public to call it on the number 9497980440, if it finds anyone using dangerous drugs.
