Police denies treatment; tipper driver dies
A tipper truck driver, who was taken into custody by the traffic police for drunk-driving, collapsed and died at a private hospital at Edappally, on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Santhosh,44, of Mamala near Thiruvamk-ulam. It is alleged that the police refused to take Santhosh to the hospital despite the fact that he showed symptoms of cardiac arrest.
Santhosh, the driver of a waste dumping tipper of Kochi Corporation, was taken into custody from Kundannoor at 10.30 am.
It is learnt that he told the cops that he had chest pain, but the police waited for the owner of the truck to reach the spot.
The traffic police relea-sed Santhosh on bail only after the truck owner K.V. Saju, who also happens to be a councillor in the Tripunithura municipality, reached the traffic station by 11.45 am.
He was then taken to a local hospital, but succu-mbed to the cardiac arrest by 12.10 pm.
Meanwhile, the cops denied the allegations that they had denied him treatment. East Traffic assista-nt commissioner Baby Vi-nod said Santhosh had not told the police about the chest pain when he was taken to the station.
Siblings of the deceased, Saju and Shaiju, have lodged a complaint before the Kalamassery police. Meanwhile, the DYFI staged a march to the East Traffic police in protest against the incident.
