Prisoners stab warden, escape from sub-jail
In a daring attempt, four remand prisoners escaped from the sub-jail here on Tuesday morning by stabbing the warden, police said.
Mohammad Iqbal, one of the four and an accused in a murder case, was later arrested from the house of a relative at Manjeswaram.
The prisoners escaped from the jail around 5.30 am by stabbing the warden with a kitchen knife, while they were deployed in the jail’s kitchen for work. They scaled the prison wall and escaped. Iqbal was arrested by a team led by Kumbala circle inspector Renjith. He would be brought to the Kasargod SP office for questioning, police said.
Police hopes to crack the conspiracy behind the jail break after questioning Iqbal. Iqbal is facing a case over the murder of his wife and child.
The other three were Thekkan Rajan, Rasheed and Rajesh. Pavithran, the warden injured in the attack, has been admitted to the Kasargod general hospital.
Senior jail official Shivadasan Thaiparambil said the jail staff could not be blamed for the escape. The attack was unexpected, he said. However, questions about security at the sub-jail are being raised.
The police formed a special squad to arrest the escaped prisoners. It also published look-out notices and strengthened security along the coastline.
