PWD to uproot cheeky hoardings
The obscene advertising hoardings and billboards across the city will soon get the axe from the Public Works Department (PWD).
The decision to uproot all the ‘cheeky’ hoardings that frequently distract motorists, was taken at a top-level review meeting convened by PWD minister V.K. Ebrahim Kun-ju in Kochi on Saturday.
“Most of these obscene billboards are placed at dangerous curves and busy junctions. These boards will be removed soon to keep the roads safe. The department is also planning to upgrade the ro-ad policy by setting new rules against such adverti-sements,” the minister said.
The PWD is also set to kick-start the works to build a road network that connects the Smart City location to the city. To aid this network, the Seaport-Airport road will also be widened to four lanes soon, the minister added.
The minister also said the PWD will build 10 Eves’ Own E-toilets each in Kochi, Thiruvanantha-puram and Kozhikode, using the funds from the gender budget this year. Another important decision taken in the meeting was to begin the technical-financial feasibility study of the Kottayam-Cherth-ala tourist highway.
PWD has also conceived an Oxbow Land Developm-ent Programme in which the vacant land obtained while straightening any cur-ve will be used for construc-ting commercial complexes, restaurants and petrol pumps.
The department has also promised the union government that it would finance 50 per cent of the pro-posed Elevated highway pro-ject on Alappuzha project.
