Rare surgery restores youth’s face

In a rare achievement, doctors at the Medical Trust Hospital (MTH) have been able to restore to shape the life of 22-year-old Nithin Vijayan, a welding worker, who lost half of his face in a gruesome accident in Changanassery on May 21, involving the bike he was riding, and a car.

Adding to the misery of Nithin, his wound was further mutilated by glass pieces, and he fractured his left leg as well.

Some 12 hours had elapsed by the time Nithin was at the Medical Trust Hospital, after being declined treatment by four hospitals in Kottayam and Ernakulam.

However, the doctors who first examined him had taken every care to preserve the facial part and sent it along.

Immediately after he was admitted to MTH, Nithin underwent a microvascular surgery; replantation of the avulsed face by a team under the leadership of Dr K.G. Bhaskara, head of the department of plastic cosmetic and reconstruction surgery. It took 14 hours for the multiple surgeries to complete.

The team comprised Dr Sachin Tendulkar, Dr Vinayak, Dr Mathew Dominic, Dr V.M . Khaleel and Dr K. Vinodan from the plastic surgery, ENT and anaesthetic wings.
