RBI issues alert against e-mail fraud
The Reserve Bank has sounded an alert on frauds being perpetrated by men who impersonate as employees of the apex bank via emails.
It has come to the Bank’s notice that many residents have been getting fictitious online offers purportedly signed by top executives or senior officials of the RBI.
“The RBI never contacts the public via unsolicited phone calls or emails asking for money or any other type of personal information,” the Bank said.
Said Smitha, a native of Ernakulam, “I’ve received an e-mail purportedly from the Fund Remittance Department of the bank.
It asks for my bank account details after saying that I ‘ve won some bounty and that I need to pay Rs 17,000 towards its ‘crediting fees’,” said Smitha N, a native of Ernakulam.
The e-mail asked the customer to contact ‘rbi_customerservice@post.com’ for any clarification and gave the Reserve Bank’s Delhi address as postal contact.
“Such attempts have come to our notice and the public should immediately file a case at the nearest cyber cell.
The fraudsters often have multiple accounts in the names of individuals or proprietary concerns in different bank branches for collecting such charges,” Alpana Killawala, general manager, said.
After accumulating a sizeable amount in these accounts, the fraudsters withdraw or transfer the money abroad and vanish, leaving the victims in the lurch, the official said.
