Residents resist drainage shift
The Kochi corporation’s controversial project using KSUDP funds to channel the drainage from MG Road via Panampalli Nagar to the Thevara-Perandoor Canal (TP Canal) is facing stiff resistance from the residents of Panampilli Nagar. The project is set to open a Pandora’s box if it materialises.
The foremost reason for this is that the TP Canal is already filled with slush and filth and any addition will increase the burden on this small canal and heighten the stench emanating from it, which will add to the woes of people residing near it.
A total of 3,000 families reside near the banks of the canal in differentcolonies in an eight km stretch in the south, besides the hundreds of other people that live in flats and residential complexes near the canal.
Matters are sure to become worse during the monsoon if more waste water is routed here as this will result in the flooding of areas from Gandhi Nagar up to Thevara by the side of the canal.
The dirty water from the canal is already a nightmare for Gandhi Nagar, South Railway station and other areas and the Kochi corporation, which has a duty to take steps to solve this, is moving in the opposite direction, allege residents in these areas.
