Rise in drug addicts in Kollam
Drug addicts are increasing in the city. The latest arrest of three youth by the Excise Department on Friday reveals that a good numbers of youngsters were buying drugs from them.
Excise personnel got a tip that 150 ampoules were transported from Ernakulam but they could recover only 41 from the youth, who revealed that the remaining was sold in the city.
“The use of drugs among the youngsters seems to be increasing recently as we are receiving a good number of youth at the de- addiction centre in the district hospital. On an average, there are 7 to 10 patients belonging to the 17 – 30 age group. Most come alone or with friends. Only a few are brought by their parents,” said Dr. D. Prabhash, neuro psychiatrist, District Hospital, Kollam to DC.
The drugs once used stimulate the neuron receptors of the human brain which tempt youth to have more. This leads the youth to become an addict. To desensitize the neuron receptors, patients require the help of a psychiatrist who can help them to recover from the habit, Mr Prabhash added.
Among youth approaching for recovery there is no gender difference, though girls hesitate to approach for treatment directly and send friends to seek advice. Counseling over phone is given to many, he said.
Parents have to be cautious when their college going children show abnormality in behavior such as coming home late, change in speech, demanding money for various purposes and telling lies one after another. A close watch can bring out whether one is using drugs or not, Mr. Prabhash added.
