Robbery gang busted in Kochi
The Thrikkakara police busted a major racket on Saturday and arrested seven youths for stealing mobile phones and computer hardware worth Rs 5,04,300.
The gang had masterminded and carried out three robberies in Thrikkakara, Kakkanad and Palarivattom, in the last two months.
The arrested were identified as T.P. Nithin alias Black, Appu and Gadkari, 20, of Kodungalloor in Thrissur, M.V. Sanish alias Devasya, 23, of Thalipparamba in Kannur, Lijin Chacko,23, of Kozhenchery in Pathanamthitta, Saibu George Thomas, 20, also of Kozhenchery, Vishnu Babu, 19, from Cherthala in Alappuzha, Sherin Lal,21, of Adoor and Jerrin Joy, 25 of Adoor.
The first theft was committed on March 23, when the gang robbed a mobile store at Vazhakkala near Kakkanad. According to the police, the gang parked their SUV near the shop and two of them broke the two shutter locks using sharp blades.
“They stole a computer, a few mobile phones, pen drives, memory cards, wrist watches and recharge coupons. The stolen goods were worth Rs 1,60,400,” said Bijo Alexander, assistant commissioner of police, Thrikkakara.
The other two robberies were carried out in April at a mobile store on the Seaport-Airport road near Bharath Matha College in Thrikkakara and an internet café at Padivattom in Palarivattom.
The gang used a Hyundai Accent car for their operations.
Goods worth Rs 1,64,400 were stolen in the Thrikkakara, while the Padivattom robbery saw a loss of Rs 1,79,500. Later, the gang sold these goods at different mobile shops in the GCDA complex at Menaka.
The police said they have also seized the stolen goods and the cars.
The culprits were held when the cops probed into the details of those who had shifted from apartments in Thrikkakara in the recent past. Nithin was the first to fall in the police net and he gave away the names of the other gang members, the police said.
The youths were presented before Aluva JFCM -1 court and were remanded.
They wanted to lead a life of luxury
The seven youths who were held by the Thrikkakara police in connection with three different cases of theft, were leading white-collar professions by day and operating shady and nefarious deals by night. The police said two of the seven arrested are IT professionals, working at Infopark.
Lijin Chacko, one among the racketeers, had a taxi car network based in Chembumukku in Kakkanad. He has under him, two people working as drivers. Another one is a chef, who has completed hotel management course.
“The fraudsters were living in a super luxurious flat owned by Lijin Chacko in Chembumukku. All the activities were masterminded at this flat. The youths said they committed the robberies to lead a luxurious life,” said Sibi Tom, sub inspector of Thrikkakara police.
