Shawarma back on sale in Kochi
Nearly two months after the woes created by the Arabian delicacy of Shawarma in the state, food joints in the city selling this food item are back in business, but not following the guidelines stipulated by food safety authorities. The food is still being prepared and sold in uncovered areas, open to dust, along the roadside.
“Food safety officers are keeping a watch on Shawarma outlets. There is a regular monitoring mechanism to check whether the eateries are complying with food safety norms,” said Ajith Kumar, district food safety officer.
The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) has also taken steps to streamline Shawarma sale in the city.
“We have sent a circular to Shawarma shop owners asking them to take necessary measures to make its preparation and sale safe and hygienic.
The association will take action against those not following instructions,” said KHRA state secretary Jose Mohan.
Meanwhile, even after the ban was lifted, most people are still reluctant to have this Arabian dish. “Though we restarted sale of Shawarma last month, there is a considerable dip in the number of people having it.
The sale has decreased by nearly 50 per cent,” said S. Razak, a shop owner.
