Soon you can order a fish bread!
Have you ever tasted fish bread? If not, you may be able to do so soon, thanks to a novel initiative of Kochi-based Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) to develop value-added fish products.
According to sources in CIFT, over 20 value-added fish products it developed would be sold through Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) outlets and Kudumbasree units across the state under the brand name Fish Maid.
Kerala state coastal development corporation (KSCADC) would function as a nodal agency to produce and market the products.
CIFT would soon sign an agreement with KSCADC, and the latter would have franchises to produce and market the products.
The products include fish bread (pesce pane), fish momos, sardine cutlets, fish roll, fish finger, cute tots, fish doughnuts, fish samosa, sweet hearts and many others.
The CIFT programme is supported by World Bank-funded Chain Project on Pelagic and Freshwater Fish, styled as an effort to add value to fish produce. It is also part of the larger National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP).
According to the sources, the CIFT has already opened a model production unit in Kollam to demonstrate the technology including packaging to intended franchises. A KTDC team has expressed its satisfaction after visiting the unit.
