Steps on to end strike in Lakshadweep ships

The Lakshadweep Develo-pment Corporation Limit-ed has launched steps to find a solution to the ongoing strike by officers working with its ships.

According to Commander Alex Thomas, general manager of the LDCL, the administration was taking all steps to end the strike.

“The LDCL is not a party to the issue as it is a matter between the officers and the manning agents. We are trying to end the strike in an amicable manner.”

The agitation, seeking higher remuneration, reportedly delayed by over five hours, the departure of M V Kavaratti from the dock here on Monday. Striking officers were replaced with back-up men to operate the ship.

There are 24 vessels under the LDCL and the operation of these has been given to four manning agencies.

The strike followed a dispute between the manning agents and officers regarding the latter’s charter of demands.
