Stricter norms for city autorickshaws

Against the background of the increasing incidence of attacks by auto drivers, the corporation is planning to rein in the autorickshaws plying in the city. Measures will be initiated soon to identify unauthorised autos and auto stands in the city.

Mayor Tony Chammany told mediapersons here on Wednesday that issue of city permits to autos would be regulated.

The number of city permits will be fixed in consultation with the Regional Transport Office. The local body has deiced that city permits would not be given to people with a criminal background.

No autos from neighbouring areas would be allowed parking facility in city auto stands.

According to the corporation, nearly 13,000 illegal autorickshaws are plying in the city. In 2004, as many as 4000 city permits were issued, out of which 1,574 are defunct now.

“The corporation is planning strict action against unauthorised auto stands. A list of authorised auto stands will be prepared within a month,” said the mayor.

A joint meeting of the RTO, traffic police officials and the mayor held on Tuesday, deliberated on ways to regulate illegal autorickshaws in the city.

A strict monitoring system will be implemented soon with the support of the traffic police to track illegal autos plying in the city without proper permits.
