Swathi Krishna returns to life
With the return to life of 17-year-old Swathi Krishna, currently convalescing after a liver transplant at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), a new hope has dawned on patients who go for transplantation.
Dr S. Sudheendran, head of the transplant department at the hospital who led the surgery, says there is risk in the first year of recovery, and then the patient can lead a normal life.
However, the rest of the life will be on the support of medicines, which will rule out the possibility of rejection of the transplanted liver by the patient’s body.
Swathi would leave the hospital on Tuesday if she is found fit in the blood tests and scan on Monday.
She will have to stay in a house close to the hospital for the next two months. For the next six months, she will need medicines worth Rs 8,000 per month and after that medicines worth Rs 3,000-4,000 a month.
An amount of Rs 27 lakh has been collected in a relief drive for Swathi while the government contributed Rs 5 lakh. The Amrita hospital gave `4 lakh and some concessions, taking the whole effort to one of the successful campaigns in the state.
