Thyroid surgery sans bloodshed
Lisie Roy, a staff nurse by profession, is happy today. The thyroid which had been troubling her was surgically removed almost two years ago.
But her happiness ste-ms from the fact that she we-ars no trace of a surgery around her neck. She is all praise for Dr Thomas Varghese who performed the operation with such ease and little trauma which helped her leave the hospital on the third day.
Today, Dr Thomas Varg-hese, HoD, surgical oncology and reconstructive surgery at Lakeshore Hospital, is getting worldwide attention for his novel method of thyroid surgery.
The doctor uses a 3 D interactive approach wherein he can see the body being dissected on the computer while the patient is actually operated upon. He calls the procedure ‘Horizontal lateral thyroidectomy –Thomas technique.’
In the surgery the keyhole is made on the side of the neck (or where the patients wants it!) unlike the common practice of placing the incision at the anterior.
In this technique, the blood supply to the gland is tackled upfront unlike in conventional surgery where the gland is tackled first.
Such a procedure enables the surgery to be done without any blood loss. The surgery is a minimally invasive one unlike the traditional one.
As of date, Dr Varghese has successfully operated upon nearly 400 thyroid patients in a span of three years.
The doctor recently won the award for Best Innovation in Surgery from the MGR Medical University, Chennai, for his work.
