Truck trapped in land feud
This vehicle is virtually trapped within four brick walls. The curious sight can be seen as one rides past Murukkumpalam, a little ahead of Vypeen, al-ong the highway to Cherai.
A fight over a strip of land right through the centre of the 40 cents of land adjacent to the state highway between Elam-kunnapuzha Panchayat and Alif Ice plant Ltd, is the reason behind this curious case. Now, the only way to take the vehicle out is to break the ne-wly constructed wall that blocks the entrance.
“The panchayat had ha-nded over the land to the Kerala Water Authority over five years ago to faci-litate the setting up of a crucial drinking water scheme being implemented by HUDCO.
The plant came up only two years ago, but its owner claim-ed the right to the three-metre path to the plant right through the centre of the panchayat-owned plot by submitting a fake sketch he obtained from the Puthuvypeen village office,” panchayat vice-president, Benny A.S. said.
A huge water tank with a capacity of 13.8 lakh litres is being set up at the plot as part of the drinking water project that is expected to addr-ess the water woes of the area. “The tank design has already been finalis-ed, the tender was out and quotations invited for the work. Now it’s not possib-le to allow a path through the plot,” Benny said.
Initially, the plant own-er had moved the court and obtained a stay on building the compound wall by submitting the al-legedly false sketch. But the panchayat obtained a stay against this and constructed the wall.
