Use of science in day-to-day life
How can a coin be used to find the measurements of the moon; why does a blade float on water if dropped gently, why does it sink if thrown into water; why are rainy clouds dark?
These are some of the tasks given to the 110 students who attended the two-day camp of the ‘Sastra Pratibha Matsaram 2012’ held at the Saraswathy Vidyaniketan here.
There were around 6500 students in the 1st level (written exams) out of which 350 progressed into the next stage of the competition open to all students from across the state. After the 3rd level, 110 made it into the two-day camp in Kochi.
“The camp mainly focused on practical level applications of various science theories that we studied in school. It was fun and knowledge all the way and a refreshing experience for me.
Never in the camp did I feel that it was a competition,” said Mukesh M., a class 12 student of GHSS, Koduvayoor, Palakkad. Both he and
Aarathi S, a student of Aravinda Vidhya Mandir, Kottayam, made it to the national level. Dr. K. Girish Kumar, Professor of the Department of Applied Chemistry, (CUSAT), exhorted the students to attend such camps
enthusiastically, rather than seeing them as a hurdle to pass.
