An ongoing leadership meet of SNDP Yogam at Munnar on Saturday declared support to the move by its general secretary Vellapally Natesan to form a political party, aimed at bringing all Hindu organisations under one umbrella.

The decision by the SNDP Yogam, representing backward Ezhava community, immediately evoked a positive response from the Nair Service Society at Perunna, Changanassery, giving a further impetus for the unity of the two organisations, which had fought against each other for long.

According to sources close to SNDP Yogam, the leadership meet overwhelmingly agreed with Mr Natesan’s proposal for the political party. Out of 138 unions under the Yogam, 130 agreed to the proposal. Representatives from remaining eight unions were not at the meet.

“The decks have been cleared for the larger unity of Hindus under a political party. The name of the party and other details will be announced later,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the political approach paper, presented at the meeting, alleged that the State was witnessing an unprecedented level of communal politics.

The document said that the elevation of Mr M.A. Baby to the politburo of the CPI (M) and Rajya Sabha membership for Prof P.J. Kurien in UDF were “all part of communal games played by political parties.”

Those appointed to the personal staff of ministers and those selected to head various government-run corporations and boards also belonged to minority communities, the document alleged.

At Perunna, NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said the director board of the organisation had decided to join hands with SNDP Yogam to bring together the members of the majority communities.
In a statement, he said that the NSS would resolve all outstanding issues with SNDP Yogam through discussions.

“The unity will safeguard the interest of both the communities,” the statement said

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
