Water tankers must register

In an effort to address complaints about the quality of drinking water supplied in the city, the civic body has decided to make registration mandatory for all water tankers.

“All tankers distributing drinking water in the city should be registered with the corporation, painted blue and the registration number should be clearly displayed on the vehicle. Strict action will be taken against erring tanker owners,” informed mayor Tony Chammany.

The mayor convened a joint meeting with the representatives of the Tanker Lorry Owners Welfare Association and the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials on Wednesday to discuss the issues related to drinking water supply.

The meeting was convened in the background of media reports that drinking water distributed in the city was contaminated, the mayor said.

The registration process will start on Thursday. “If any unregistered tanker is found to be distributing water, its permit will be cancelled,” said Chammany.

Maximum water should be taken from those sources identified by the water authority and if needed water can be collected from other sources.

Tanker owners have been asked to supply water only after an inspection by the health department authorities.

During the meeting, KWA officials informed that water would be supplied from their reservoirs in Thammanam, Muppath-adam and Choondy.

If the water is found to be contaminated, strict action will be taken against the tankers. The mayor urged the cooperation of the tanker owners’ association representatives for this.
It was also decided to convene another meeting before May 20.
