2 arrested in park street rape case

Within four days after taking over the Park Street rape case, the detective department (DD) of the Kolkata police on Saturday cracked the case and arrested two persons who were involved in the crime along with their two friends.

Making this announcement on Saturday evening, joint commissioner of the police (crime) Damyanti Sen confirmed that the 37-year-old Anglo-Indian woman was raped. The two arrested accused were identified as Nishad Alam, alias Ruman Khan, alias Tushi, of Karaya Road in Beniapukur and Sumit Bajaj of Gariahat. Two other accused who were also involved in the heinous crime have been identified and the police hopes to arrest them soon. The arrests of the real culprits came as a big relief to Sharafat Ali, Azhar Ali and Luvy Gidwani, who have been given clean chits by the police.
These three were originally accused of the crime. While Gidwani is in Canada, Sharafat and Azhar were interrogated vigorously at Lalbazar. All three had all along maintained that they were innocent and had absolutely no link with the incident. Even the joint commissioner of police (crime) had given them clean chit by admitting that the police had not found any evidence suggesting their presence at the place of the crime.
Voicing her relief at the breakthrough, the victim said: “The truth has prevailed.” The victim may have been vindicated but chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been left red-faced because she had claimed that the entire rape case was fabricated to malign her government. Khan and Sumit were arrested from Howrah when they were trying to flee, said Ms Sen. Sumit is the son of a transporter and stays at an upscale apartment at Gariahat Road. Raids are underway to catch the other two accused, Ms Sen added. While one of them has reportedly fled the state, the other one is still in Kolkata.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
